Bengals keep playoff hopes alive with win, await fate Sunday
PITTSBURGH — The Cincinnati Bengals kept their playoff hopes alive with a thrilling 19-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium on Saturday night.
A stout defensive effort, led by Trey Hendrickson's 3.5 sacks, was the difference as the Bengals (9-8) held on for a late lead. Hendrickson's performance marked his season sack total at 17.5, cementing his status among the league's best defenders.
Bengals defensive unit, who allowed the Steelers to run havoc over them on December, found redemption in stifling Pittsburgh into a mere 193 total yards and a poor third-down percentage of 33%. Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt said what it meant by having a return game against this same opponent:
"We owed them. At the end of the day, we came here and did what we needed to do.
Cincinnati’s offense, however, left points on the field. Joe Burrow, who threw for 277 yards and a touchdown, acknowledged the team’s struggles in the red zone. Three drives deep into Steelers’ territory ended with field goals instead of touchdowns.
The Bengals' season almost derailed early, beginning 0-3 and then sitting at 4-8. But Saturday's victory gives them hope. With the Broncos and Dolphins losing on Sunday, the Bengals could still claim the final AFC playoff spot.
Coach Zac Taylor still believes: "This team is capable of anything. If we get in, nobody will want to face us.
For Burrow, the season has been a rollercoaster, but he remains confident in the Bengals’ ability to compete if they make the playoffs.
“The odds are long, but we’ve got a shot,” Burrow said.
Now, Cincinnati waits for the final day of the regular season, knowing their playoff destiny hinges on the outcomes of key games.
