Xbox prices hiked worldwide amid tariff uncertainty
Microsoft's announcement of price increases for its Xbox consoles and accessories, which coincide with Sony's similar actions in the face of mounting U.S. tariff pressure, is a major step for the gaming industry.
In the United States, the Xbox Series X will now retail for about $600, a $100 increase. This change comes after Sony recently raised the price of its PlayStation 5 Pro, which is now available for about $700 in the US. Both businesses point to the main cause of these hikes as increased manufacturing costs brought on by tariffs that affect supply networks from nations like China, Vietnam, and Japan.
Microsoft intends to increase the cost of some first-party games to about $80 in addition to hardware, matching Nintendo's pricing for games like "Mario Kart World." These modifications point to a new industry norm in reaction to rising manufacturing and development expenses.
With Nintendo slated to introduce the Switch 2 in June, the video game industry expects console sales to propel growth in 2025.
